Third quarter highlights included:

  • Annualized return on equity of -9.6%.
  • Growth in direct written premiums of 8.2% primarily as a result of the addition of Direct Auto.
  • For the quarter, earnings per share was -$0.32, down $0.76 compared to the prior year.
  • Numerous late summer weather-related events impacted loss experience to our insured homes, farms, vehicles, and commercial businesses, adding approximately 25.0 points to our combined ratio.
  • Increased frequency and severity of liability losses affected our private passenger auto business.
  • Cooler and wetter growing season causing an increase in the expected loss ratio for our multi-peril crop.
  • After-tax reduction to our earnings of $304 due to the net unrealized loss in our equity securities portfolio.
  • Reported combined ratio of 117.5% for the quarter and 102.3% for the first nine months of 2019.

“While our third quarter results were unprofitable due to weather and other factors, we had an exceptional start to the year posting a 93.5% combined ratio through the first six months. We did experience a high frequency of weather-related events during the third quarter, and a continuation of cooler and wetter growing conditions through the summer and early fall, causing a deterioration in our combined ratio. However, our results year-to-date are still profitable and our weather-related claims are considered within our projections for the year,” said Michael J. Alexander, President and CEO. “The third quarter net loss attributable to NI Holdings was $6,979, which included a reduction to earnings of $304 due to a downward fluctuation in our equity securities portfolio. However, our results are still within expectations for the first nine months of 2019.”

“In the third quarter, a number of localized storms brought hail and wind damage to homes, farms, commercial businesses, and vehicles through parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska. Our private passenger auto business was also affected by a higher frequency and severity of liability losses. These factors, along with a wet spring and cool summer impacting our crop business, contributed to elevated loss ratios for the third quarter of 2019, compared to very favorable loss experience a year ago.”

“In our non-standard auto business, rate increases implemented in Nevada to address the adverse claims experience resulting from the higher mandated liability limits have started to moderate our loss ratios. Those rate increases have reduced the number of vehicles we insure in both Arizona and Nevada, resulting in a decrease in Primero earned premium for the quarter compared to a year ago. We believe this to be a short-term decrease in earned premium.”

“The increase in our written premiums is a result of the continued growth in our policies inforce, and rate adjustments implemented to ensure that we are getting the proper premiums for the risks we are insuring, along with the addition of the Direct Auto book of business. Direct Auto contributed $10,965 of net earned premiums to third quarter 2019, compared to $3,591 a year ago. Excluding Direct Auto, our net earned premiums grew approximately 9.1% from third quarter 2018.”

Effective January 1, 2019, the market fluctuations attributable to equity securities are included in the Company’s results of operations. The pre-tax market downward fluctuation in equity securities of $384 is included in net capital gain on investments in our statement of operations for third quarter 2019, and is now $8,253 for the first nine months of 2019. After-tax, this amount is -$0.01 earnings per share for third quarter and $0.29 for the nine months. Prior to adoption of this accounting pronouncement, net unrealized gains on equity securities were recorded in accumulated other comprehensive income. Net unrealized gains on fixed income securities continue to be recorded in accumulated other comprehensive income.

Shareholders’ equity increased $16,554 from December 31, 2018 to September 30, 2019. Net income of $9,352 was joined by a substantial rebound in our accumulated other comprehensive income as investor sentiment toward future interest rate actions became more favorable. The Company repurchased 116,034 shares of common stock for $2,006 during the first nine months of 2019.
