Background
Merriam Webster defines a “guru” as someone with strong “intellectual guide” in a certain field. In the investment world, gurus usually have the following characteristics:
- Strong long-term performance.
- Over $1 billion in net assets.
- Low portfolio turnover.
Portfolio managers that meet the above three criteria qualify for the “Guru Hall of Fame.” The list includes Warren Buffett (Trades, Portfolio) and other famous investors like Prem Watsa (Trades, Portfolio), Bill Ackman (Trades, Portfolio), Carl Icahn (Trades, Portfolio), David Tepper (Trades, Portfolio) and George Soros (Trades, Portfolio). Such gurus offer strong market insights and stock ideas.
New guru page overview
As Figure 1 illustrates, the new guru page contains three sections at the top: a key guru statistics section, a flash chart and a portfolio composition chart.

The key guru statistics section contains fundamental information like the name of the guru’s firm, the date of the latest portfolio update, the number of stocks, total value and quarterly turnover. We have added the guru’s top five holdings in this section: for example, Berkshire Hathaway Inc.’s (BRK.A, Financial)(BRK.B, Financial) top five holdings are Apple Inc. (AAPL, Financial), Wells Fargo & Co. (WFC, Financial), The Kraft Heinz Co. (KHC, Financial), Bank of America Corp. (BAC, Financial) and The Coca-Cola Co. (KO, Financial) as Figure 2 illustrates.

Two alternative ways to view a guru’s top holdings
The flash chart maps a guru’s top buys, sells and holdings, as illustrated in Figure 3.

The X-axis lists market caps while the Y-axis lists the price change from average. Green dots indicate the guru’s top buys while red dots indicate the top sells.
Gray circles indicate the guru’s top holdings: larger circles represent the guru’s largest holdings. For example, the large gray circle with a green dot ($1 trillion market cap, 20% price increase) represents Apple, Buffett’s largest holding.
On the other hand, the portfolio composition chart arranges the guru’s portfolio with the largest holdings on the top-left corner and the smallest holdings near the bottom-right corner. Figure 4 shows a sample portfolio composition chart.

If you click on one of the smaller rectangles, the portfolio composition chart will zoom in on a guru’s smaller holdings as Figure 5 illustrates.

You can also have multiple guru tabs open
Our new guru pages allow you to view multiple guru pages in one GuruFocus window. For example, you can view the portfolios for Buffett, Ackman and Icahn just by opening or clicking on the respective tab. Figure 6 illustrates this with tabs for Buffett and Daniel Loeb (Trades, Portfolio).
