U.S. market indexes were lower on Tuesday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20,651.30 for a loss of 6.72 points or 0.03%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,353.78 for a loss of 3.38 points or 0.14%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,866.77 for a loss of 14.15 points or 0.24%.

The VIX Volatility Index reached a new high for the day indicating increased risk and uncertainty in equities. The VIX Volatility Index ended at 15.14 with a gain of 1.09 points or 7.76%.

Global political risks and first quarter earnings uncertainty were factors affecting market trading on Tuesday. The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index was the leading economic report affecting market trading for the day. It decreased to 104.7 from 105.3.
