S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite reach new highs

U.S. market indexes were higher Tuesday with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite closing at new highs. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 19912.71 for a gain of 112.86 points or 0.57%. The S&P 500 closed at 2280.07 for a gain of 14.87 points or 0.66%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5600.96 for a gain of 48.01 points or 0.86%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 11.07 for a loss of -0.70 points or -5.95%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Fourth quarter corporate earnings helped stocks on Tuesday. Economic reports affecting trading included the following:

  • The PMI Manufacturing Index increased to 55.1 from 54.2.
  • Existing Home Sales decreased to 5.490 million SAAR.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

DuPont (DD, Financial) 4.49%

IBM (IBM, Financial) 2.85%

Intel (INTC, Financial) 2.31%

In the broad market, materials and financial led gains. Technology was also higher with the S&P 500 technology sector gaining 0.62%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1369.21 for a gain of 21.37 points or 1.59%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 838.01 for a gain of 12.91 points or 1.56%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8104.58 for a gain of 120.76 points or 1.51%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9781.65 for a gain of 143.36 points or 1.49%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1697.18 for a gain of 25.34 points or 1.52%; the S&P 100 Index at 1004.99 for a gain of 4.49 points or 0.45%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1357.13 for a gain of 10.54 points or 0.78%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1266.45 for a gain of 8.99 points or 0.71%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 639.46 for a gain of 5.65 points or 0.89%.
