Hello. This is Joe Shoen, speaking to you from Phoenix, Arizona. U-Haul was started in 1945 by my parents when my father was discharged from the Navy, and they needed to move back home. Tires, gas and metal were in short supply as World War II was coming to a close. My parents, of course, grew up in the Great Depression. Scarcity shaped how the company was run in its earliest days. We continue to operate today under a similar premise of limiting waste.
Our partnership with communities reduces vehicle registration and greenhouse gas emissions. Over the years, we have pioneered starch-based packing peanuts, permeable ground cover, cardboard box reuse, moving pads made from discarded fabrics, reuse of obsolete buildings, improving the fuel economy of our equipment and a long list of other recognized sustainable and community-enhancing business practices.
